An afternoon drive along the coastal avenue through the “Athenian Riviera” to Cape Sounio.
In southeastern most point of Attica, the temple of the ancient god of the sea and earthquakes is build on a sheer cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea.
According to mythology, it is the site where Aegeas, King of Athens, was said to have jumped to his death upon seeing the black sails of a returning ship and incorrectly assumed the death of his son, Thesseus. Hence the name “Aegean” Sea.
It is here that ancient Greek sailors would make sacrifices hoping that Poseidon will grand them good seas and allow them a safe return.
